At True Colours Consulting & Ranch, we offer a unique approach that combines Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) with equine-assisted learning, grounded in connection, trust, and meaningful engagement. Our work is rooted in a child-first, trauma-informed approach where each learner is respected as a whole person, not a diagnosis.
Our practice is strongly influenced by the work of Dr. Greg Hanley and other leaders in compassionate behaviour analysis. Their research on assent-based care and universal safety protocols has helped guide our commitment to building environments where safety, trust, and meaningful engagement come before demands. At True Colours, we have adapted these principles to fit our farm-based setting, creating programs that prioritize regulation, relationship, and joyful participation.
Rather than focusing solely on compliance or behaviour reduction, our goal is to help learners build meaningful skills, develop emotional regulation, and gain tools to navigate the world in ways that align with their needs and values.
At True Colours, this philosophy is expressed through what we call Horse Powered Behaviour Intervention™ , an integration of behaviour science, experiential learning, and partnership with horses. In this environment, learners practice real-world skills such as communication, leadership, emotional regulation, and problem-solving while working alongside our equine partners.
We also recognize the historical and ongoing concerns raised by autistic individuals and advocates regarding harmful experiences within traditional compliance-based models of ABA. These concerns — including normalization, coercion, and the use of aversive practices — are serious and valid. Our team is committed to being part of a better path forward. This means continually examining our practices for implicit bias, prioritizing ethical and compassionate care, and centring autonomy, self-advocacy, and meaningful outcomes over external expectations.
Our programs are designed to support growth, not change who someone is. Self-advocacy is an essential part of our work, and we honour each learner’s voice, including both verbal and non-verbal expressions of dissent.
Horses play an important role in this process as co-regulators and partners in learning. Their sensitivity to body language, emotion, and intention creates powerful opportunities for learners to experience trust, emotional safety, and authentic connection. We believe real progress grows through respectful relationships and meaningful experiences — and few environments support that more naturally than time spent with horses in nature.
