At True Colours Consulting & Ranch, we offer a unique program that combines Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) with Equine-Assisted Learning, grounded in connection, trust, and meaningful engagement. Our work is rooted in a child-first, trauma-informed approach, where each learner is respected as a whole person, not a diagnosis.
We follow the PFA-SBT model developed by Dr. Greg Hanley, which emphasizes safety, assent, and skill development through joyful, consent-based interactions. Our focus is not on compliance or behaviour reduction, but on helping learners build meaningful skills, develop emotional regulation, and gain tools to navigate the world in ways that align with their needs and values.
We recognize the historical and ongoing concerns raised by autistic individuals and advocates regarding the abuse they have experienced under traditional models of ABA. These concerns — including compliance-based models, normalization, and use of aversives— are serious and valid. Our team is committed to being part of a better path forward. That means continuously examining our practices for implicit biases and ethical procedures, centering client autonomy, and prioritizing relationships, self-advocacy, and meaningful outcomes over external expectations.
Our programs are designed to support personal growth, not change who someone is. Self-advocacy is an essential component of our services, and we always honour the client's dissent through both verbal and non-verbal cues.
Horses play an important role as co-regulators in this process, helping foster trust, emotional safety, and authentic connection. We believe that real progress is built through respect, relationship, and real-world experiences — and few environments support that more powerfully than time spent with animals in nature.
